Claris Elizabeth Cooksey (nee: Lamb), 87 years of age, and a resident of Elyria Township, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain following a brief illness.
She was born April 12, 1925 in Linn, West Virginia. In 1944, Claris moved to Elyria where she has made her home for the last sixty-eight years.
She was employed through the Elyria School System for thirteen years before retiring in 1987. In her younger years, Claris worked at the Perry Fay Company during World War II making bomb shells and parachutes. She was an active member of the Church of the Open Door. Claris loved children, and for forty-seven years she taught Sunday School for the 4yr. old class. She was also a member of the Open Circle and the Ladies Bible Study.
Survivors include her sons Steven Cooksey and his wife Jill of Amherst, Terry Cooksey and his wife Cheryl of North Ridgeville, Brian Cooksey of Amherst; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; her brother and his wife William and June Lamb of Warren and her sister Helen Lilly of Lorain.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years Earl Cooksey on May 17, 2008; her infant son; grandson Michael Cooksey in 2007; her daughter in law Tracey Cooksey in 2002; her brothers Corley and Clenzil; her sister Clella Radcliff and by her parents Allen and Lilly Lamb (nee: Lauther).
Friends may call Tuesday, December 11, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Robert Wickens, of Church of the Open Door, will officiate. Burial will follow at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Open Door Christian School; 8287 West Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
