VERMILION - Dale Sawyer Masten, 73, of Vermilion, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 at home after a three month illness.
Dale was born December 20, 1939 in Lorain and had been a lifelong area resident.
He was a graduate of Lorain High School and studied Criminal Justice at Lorain County Community College. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1958 to 1962. Dale worked as a Police Officer for the Vermilion Police Department retiring in 1990. He then worked for the Vermilion Public Schools as a school bus driver until 2008. He also worked the Lorain Harbor Patrol for 20 years.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was the 3rd District Trustee for the State of Ohio Fraternal Order of Police where he received the Member of the Year Award. He was the Secretary of the F.O.P. Local Lodge #125. He was a life member and Secretary of AMVETS Post 22, Vermilion, and served on the Vermilion Veterans Council.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Bernice Masten (nee Freeman) of Vermilion; daughter, Shauna (Rob) Bott of Huron; sons, David (Christy) Masten of Peoria, AZ and Dale (Melissa) Masten of Cincinnati;, grandchildren, Andrew, Makenzie, Carson, Micaylee, Brady, Cameron, R.J., Gus, and Romy; and a sister, Ann Henriksen, Zeeland, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Catherine (nee Mahla) Masten and brother, Timothy Masten.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 1, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Grace United Methodist Church, Coen and West Lake Roads, Vermilion. Reverend Joan Skelley-Watts will officiate, and the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors. A gathering at AMVETS Post #22, Vermilion, will immediately follow the memorial service.
