Donald L. Beckett, age 80, and a resident of Amherst, died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at New Life Hospice Residential Center, Lorain, after a short illness.

He was born August 26, 1930 in Sebring, to the late Russell and Alta (nee Kocher) Beckett. Donald was a 1948 graduate of Sebring McKinley High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict in the Panama Canal Zone. When he returned to Sebring after serving in the military, he wed Edna (nee Krahling) March 11, 1953, and the resided in Sebring until moving to Lorain in 1956. While living in Lorain, he was a member of St. John United Church of Christ.
Donald was employed at Ohio Edison from 1956 until his retirement in 1987. He worked for the utility company at the Edgewater Plant, the West Lorain Plant, and lastly at the Mad River Plant in Springfield, where he worked in a management position.
After retirement, he dedicated his life to help care for his granddaughters, who were his life. He enjoyed the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers, working crossword puzzles, and listening to country music.
Surviving is his daughter and son-in-law; Laurie A. and John Wilson of Amherst, three grandchildren; Jill Wilson of Lorain, Jodi (husband T.J.) Maderitz of Amherst, Kamie (husband Jeremy) Abraham of Amherst; a great granddaughter Reese Lola; and his sister Doris McCauley of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 31 years Edna (1984), a brother Dale Beckett, and a sister Leona Workman.
Family will receive friends Tuesday 11 a.m. until time of service at noon at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Amherst, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Military rites will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
