Donald R. "Don" Friend
LORAIN - Donald R. "Don" Friend, age 77, of Lorain, passed away in the early morning hours of March 5, 2013.
He was born in Bergoo, West Virginia on January 20, 1936 and was a 195 graduate of Webster Springs High School; he had been a resident of Lorain since 1960.
A Veteran of the United States
, Mr. Friend fulfilled duty assignments as a Specialist 4 attached to the 86th Ordnance Detachment and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. Don was employed as an Inspector at U.S. Steel Corporation's Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. He retired in 1997 following a career that spanned thirty-one years with the steel producer.
He was a member of the former Delaware Avenue United Methodist Church and was currently attending Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church .
Mr. Friend enjoyed bowling with the Lorain Seniors' League at Shoreway Lanes; an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, he also liked to hunt, fish, and travel in his free time.
Survivors include his wife Mildred (nee Skidmore), and his sister Kathlea "Kathy" Gibson residing in Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his parents Hartzel and Edna (nee Caplinger) Friend.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with Reverend Greg Sellers and Chaplain Chuck Boals co-officiating; burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to the Building Fund at Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church - 3015 Meister Rd., Lorain, OH 44053.
