Frank J. Gencur COLUMBUS — Frank J. Gencur, age 86, passed away in the early morning hours of April 7th, 2013 while a patient at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Gencur was born in Lorain on May 2, 1926 and had been a lifelong resident of the city prior to moving to Columbus in 2009. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments during World War II as a Technician 5th Grade attached to the 803rd Engineer Aviation Battalion in the South Pacific. Frank was the recipient of the Philippine Independence Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a machine operator for the Ridge Tool Company in Elyria; he had previously worked in a similar capacity for the Thew Shovel Company in Lorain. Mr. Gencur was an active parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church where he served in a multitude of capacities including usher, handyman, member of the Holy Name Society, and manager of the parish's Catholic Charities campaign. He also had the privilege of moving the cornerstone of the parish day school prior to the structure being razed in the early 1980's. In addition, he was a member of St. John the Baptist Lodge. In his free time, Frank enjoyed woodworking. Survivors include sons Paul A. (Renee) Gencur of Hudson and Michael A. (David Campbell) Gencur of Columbus, daughter Michelle A. (Thomas) Shaw of Lorain, four grandchildren, brother Jim Gencur of Safety Harbor Florida, sister Irene (Frank) Amato of Elyria, and dear friend Betty Darin of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his wife Anne (nee Klein), by his parents Emery and Susan (nee Hancak) Gencur, and by his brother Reverend Paul Gencur. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A rosary will be recited there at 7:00 p.m. by members of the Holy Trinity Holy Name Society. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 East Erie Avenue with Reverend Richard Hudak, Pastor of the parish officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the United States Army assisted by Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Diasbled American Veterans.
