ELYRIA - Gertrude "Gertie" Ann Anderson (nee: Clark), 81 years of age, and a resident of Elyria, was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain. |
She was born June 7, 1929 at Lakewood Hospital in Ohio, raised in Elyria, attended Norwalk High School for her junior year while living with her aunt, then returned and graduated from Elyria High School in 1947.
Gertrude was employed with the Peerless Laundry, the Sunshine Family Book Store, both in Elyria and finally with the Church of the Open Door in Elyria as an Assistant in the Financial Department where she served faithfully for thirty-three years, retiring in 1998. She was involved with the founding of Women Anew in 1972. An active member of the Church of the Open Door in Elyria she was a member of the Mother - Daughter Banquet Committee, served as Vacation Bible School Superintendent, Sunday School Class Care Group Leader, and also served as a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army. She loved bird watching, traveling, camping, doing puzzles, working in the garden and the yard. A vocal sports fan, Gertie enjoyed watching all types of sporting events, especially those of her grandchildren of whom she was their biggest fan.
Gertie leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Rebecca Pence and her husband Michael of Elyria; her son Richard Anderson and his wife Ann of Elyria, Ohio; her grandchildren Elizabeth Adams and Jacqueline Pence; her sister Patricia Knarr of Jonesboro, Tennessee; and her brother Bruce Clark of Roswell, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-eight years Russel Andrew Anderson on December 22, 2004; by her parents Alexander and Helen Clark - Gerrick (nee: Bailey); by her brother Robert J. Clark; and by her sister Evelyn Hafferkamp.
Friends may call Sunday, March 13, 2011, from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will immediately follow visitation Sunday at 4 p.m. The Rev. William Y. Williams, associate pastor of Church of the Open Door in Elyria, will officiate. Burial will be held privately in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
