Gilman Roy "Gil" Baker Obituary
Gilman "Gil" Roy Baker, 85, of Wellington, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018, at Keystone Pointe in LaGrange, after a long illness. He was born on June 16, 1932, in Brunswick, Ohio, to Roy E. and Nellie G. (Young) Baker.
Gil proudly served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard; then he went on to graduate from the Ohio State University with a B.S. in Education. He spent most of his life teaching others, both inside and outside the classroom, having taught agricultural programs at New London High School and the Medina County Career Center. As a part time farmer, Gil was truly a friend to all farmers, and he loved helping other farmers improve their farming and business skills.
Beyond his teaching, he also worked as a manager for the Mansfield, Oberlin, and Medina offices of the Production Credit Association.
In his free time Gil enjoyed playing golf, reading, and helping his son, Gary, build an airplane. Also, he served 21 years on the Lorain Co. Board of Health, and he was an active member of the Medina United Methodist Church. Above all, Gil was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was very proud of his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lorene (Heidenreich) Baker; sons Gary (Mary) Baker and Douglas (Shelley) Baker; grandsons Cody (Alli) Baker, Brian (Amy) Baker, Ian (Danielle) Baker, and Drew; great-grandchildren Vincent, Colton, and Autumn; sisters Muriel McClaflin and Marvelle Storrow; and brother Ronald (Lois) Baker plus many nieces and nephews.
Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Nellie Baker; and his brother, Harold Baker.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 12, 2018, from 9 to 11:00 AM at Waite and Son Funeral Home, 765 North Court Street, Medina. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM; following visitation. Dr. Dave Tennant will officiate. Burial will follow at Spencer Cemetery.
