Jeanne (Kochan) Sommers

Obituary Condolences

SUMMIT, N.J. - Jeanne Kochan Alexander Sommers died on November 23 at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. She was born in Lorain, Ohio, the daughter of Helen Kochan and John Kochan, Sr. She graduated for Lorain High School in 1939, married Arnold Grayson Alexander in 1941, as was sadly widowed in 1959. Jeanne attended Baldwin-Wallace College and taught elementary school at the same time as bravely raising her daughter as a single parent for many years. She graduated with BS in elementary Ed in 1971 and continued her graduate education for years after. Jeanne taught first grade at Keystone Elementary in LaGrange, Ohio for many years before moving on to other grades and other school districts, including Bellaire, Ohio and the Christine school district in the Wilmington, Delaware area. She retired from teaching in 1996.
Jeanne moved to Delaware to be near her daughter in 1980. She married Earl Eugene Sommers in 1984 and was widowed again in 2010. She moved to Scotch Plains, NJ shortly after, to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
Jeanne grew up speaking Russian at home and put her bilingual skills to good use during a trip to her family homeland of Belarus in 2002. She was fond of books, antiques, and classic movies. She was immensely proud of her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Grayson Alexander, grandchildren Nikolai and Yustina Alexander-Himlan, and brother George Kochan. She was pre-deceased by her parents and siblings John Kochan, Jr. and Helen Kochan Roig.
The funeral will be on Monday, November 28, and burial will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, Delaware, on December 6th at 1 p.m.
