ELYRIA - Leroy Shumate, 67, of Elyria, passed away unexpected on April 30, 2013 in his home.
A lifelong resident of Elyria attended Midview High School and Lorain County Community College
Mr. Shumate was a License Bail Bondsman for the State of Ohio, he also was a well known speaker for his opinion on the WJTB Radio 1040am on the program Speak Up and Speak Out. He was also a life member of the NAACP Oberlin and Elyria Branch and the organizer for King of Kings for the memorial month of April. A Veteran of the US Army Service serving 2 tours in the Vietnam War and also involved with the Veterans Administration for Lorain County.
He enjoyed discussing the bible, black history, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories his compassion of many years: Christella Willis of Elyria, Oh., Daughter: Marie Gardener of Elyria, Oh., Son: Philip Shumate of Columbus, Oh., Grandson; PVT. Terrance Shumate of the US Army Station in Japan and 2 granddaughter of Alexandria Gardener and Kayla Gardener both of Elyria, Oh., Sisters: Katherine (James) Legard and Karen Jean (Michael) Taylor both of Elyria, Oh., Aunt: Barbara Jean Wiggins of Alabama., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his Parents Clifford F. and Ellen L. Shumate, Son: Clifford Shumate III, Brother: Richard "Buba" Shumate.
Friends may call Wednesday May 8, 2013 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home, 127 W. Bridge Street, Elyria, OH 44035 and Thursday May 9, 2013 10:00am until the time of service at 11:00am at Original Glorious Apostolic Church 995 Foster Ave, Elyria, Oh., 44035Rev. Dixie Smith will officiating. Pastor Doris E. Williams will give eulogy.
Burial will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National VA Cemetery in Rittman Oh.
