ELYRIA - Mrs. Linda Smith-Mahone went from labor to eternal rest on Friday, May 3, 2013 after a sudden illness at Mercy Regional hospital. She was born January 5, 1952 in Union, South Carolina to Hazel and the late Ernest L. Smith Sr.
Linda was educated in the Lorain Public School system graduating from Admiral King High School in 1970. She went on to further her education by attending Cuyahoga Community College, Lorain County Community College, Capital University, and University of Phoenix where she received her Masters' degree in Nursing. She had recently set her goals on obtaining her PHD in Nursing.
Her spiritual walk began at Fairfield Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church in Lorain, Ohio; she belonged to a gospel singing group with her sisters ""The Smith Sisters"" and the ""Choraleers."" After moving to Elyria, Linda joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Elyria, Ohio.
Linda worked in various medical facilities throughout Lorain and Cuyahoga counties from Respiratory Therapy, to the profession that brought her most joy as a Registered Nurse. She used her education and experiences to teach others she worked with as an adjunct professor at LCCC, Merida Huron Hospital, and Cuyahoga Community Colleges. She taught CPR and First Aid and was a registered CPR/First AID training instructor for American Red Cross. She also served as a nurse on the Elyria Chapter of American Red Cross's disaster team. She belonged to various organizations and groups, including Martha Chapter #25 OES as well as Al Lalim Court NO. 205, Daughters of ISIS and the National Association of Black Nurses. Linda enjoyed traveling including cruising. She loved her family and loved spending time with them at the annual family reunions and visiting family in South Carolina. She was a founding member of the Land Sanders Whiteside Worthy Family Reunion Inc. (LSWWC) and served as the secretary of the organization for over 30 years. Playing the piano, singing, listening to music and helping others were things that she loved to do. Her most beloved joy was watching and spending time attending sporting events with her grandson Lil Damion (Bam).
Cherishing her memories is her husband of 37 years, James Mahone Sr.; sons: James Mahone of Kentucky, Derek Mahone and Damion Mahone of Elyria, and Kevin Jones of San Antonio, Texas; her mother Mrs. Hazel O. Smith of Union, S.C.; sisters A. Ruth Smith of Oberlin, Ohio; Jackie Smith of Louisville, Ky., and Veronica Smith of Union, S.C.; brothers Jesse James Harris (Virginia) of Jonesville, S.C., Ernest Smith Jr., of Lorain, Ohio, and Edwin Smith (Yvette) of Charlotte, N.C.; four brother in laws and two sister in laws and two aunts, Mrs. Sarah P. Elders of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. Seretha Land of Chester, S.C.; special grandson Damion Mahone Jr.; special foster grandson Aaron Mitchell and 13 other grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. There are many people who crossed Linda's path with whom she develop strong attachments including Mike and Jackie Verda and Family and the Midview High School Athletic Boosters Club; special sisters Mrs. Erma, J. Brown, Mrs. Evelyn Nelson, Ms. Patricia Singleton and Ms. Dotti Washington.
Linda was preceded in death by her father Ernest L. Smith Sr.; sister Mary Smith-Walker; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church 614 W. River Rd. N, Elyria, OH 44035. Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. with services following. Rev. Marcettes Cunningham will be officiating.
