Phyllis Ann (Farkas) Ferancy Obituary
Phyllis Ann Ferancy
Phyllis Ann Ferancy (nee: Farkas), 70, passed away on October 22, 2012 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio. She was born in Lorain, Ohio on April 30, 1942 to Steve and Julia Farkas, and graduated from Lorain High School with the Class of 1960A. She was a member of the National Honor Society and enjoyed participating in A Cappella Choir (under the legendary Howard Hansen). She married in 1962 and had two daughters.
Phyllis began her career as a secretary for the Lorain Board of Education and later worked for the IBEW Local 129 for many years. Determined to get a college education, she attended evening classes while working, first obtaining an Associate degree from LCCC, and later earning her BA cum laude from Baldwin Wallace College in 1993. She became an HR expert, working for Lear Romec, Drop Dies and Forging, and National City Bank.
She moved to Avon, Ohio in 1989. She enjoyed living two blocks from the library as she was an avid reader and belonged to several book groups. She also maintained a 50-year bond with a group of neighborhood friends, simply referred to as "Club." They met monthly to play pokeno, and have many loud laughs, keeping their children up at night listening curiously!
Phyllis was a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan. She enjoyed politics and volunteered for the Democratic Party. She was very proud of her granddaughters and enjoyed attending many of their athletic events and dance recitals until just a few months ago.
Shortly after retiring, she was diagnosed with clear cell uterine cancer and she beat the odds for seven years. In May, after moving to Toledo to be near family, her condition was complicated by a stroke and she was no longer able to receive the treatment (Avastin), which had worked so well for her in preventing disease progression.
Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Sue (Mike) Lonsway and Robin (Larry) Moloney; granddaughters, Delaney Lonsway, Cameryn Lonsway, Megan Moloney, and Kate Moloney; brother, Stephen J. Farkas, and sister Madeline (Dennis) Block; nieces Kathie Shaver, Amanda Sable, Lindsay Pollock and nephew Mike Farkas as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews, and many dear cousins. She is also survived by dear friends Judy, Ellie, Karen, Betty, and the Club girls.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Steven C. and Julia (nee Bernosky) Farkas; sister-in-law Sandra Farkas and niece Laurie Ireland.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, October 26, with a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27 at Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, Ohio.
