Robert Arthur Meesig
AMHERST - Robert Arthur Meesig, 83 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 28, 1929 in Lorain. Robert was a lifetime resident of Amherst and graduated from Amherst High School in the class of 1947. He continued his education graduating from Baldwin Wallace College.
Robert proudly served as an air traffic controller in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. While serving in Japan he received the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was employed as a computer program at TRW formerly Nelson Stud Welding, before taking an early retirement to care for his wife. Robert was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post #1662, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #1442 both of Amherst. Robert was a former member of the Amherst School Board for many years and served on the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. His hobbies included gardening, golf and working on cars.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years Roberta Meesig (nee: Diedrick); daughters Deborah Meesig, M.D., J.D. of Columbus; Marla Sas and her husband Edward of Amherst, Joanne Downs and her husband David of Ham Lake, MN, Amanda Ferry, M.D. and her husband William, Esq. of Bay Village; ten grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur Paul and Helen Meesig (nee: Nugent).
Friends may call Friday, February 1, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 9:30 at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Michael Denk, pastor will officiate. Full Military Honors will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Animal Protective League; 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
