Roy L. Hisle Obituary
LORAIN - Roy L. Hisle, 79, of Lorain, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
He was born in Waco, Kentucky on September 26, 1932, and as an infant, his family moved to Portsmouth, Ohio. As a student at Portsmouth High School he excelled in basketball. He was selected to receive a scholarship to Ohio State University but chose to join the military. Roy joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and fought in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medals and was also a boxer while serving in the Army. Following his discharge from the Army he moved to Lorain and worked at U.S. Steel. He later moved to Florida where he worked in construction. Upon retiring from construction in 1988 he moved back to Lorain. After his return to Lorain he worked in maintenance for the Lorain City Schools and retired in 2008.
Roy was a member of Greater St. Matthew A.M.E. Church in Lorain. He served on the usher board and did maintenance at the church. In his leisure time he enjoyed driving and going to Lakeview Park.
He leaves behind his companion of 20 years, Rhoda Lee of Lorain; 2 daughters, Claudette (Jack) Taylor of Hampton GA and Darlene Casey of Lorain; 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; 4 sisters, Mary Kay Bruce, Charlotte Hisle and Linda Jefferies, all of Lorain, and Bobbi Joe Shannon of Louisville KY; a brother, Tom (Rosemary) Hisle of Lorain; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Roy was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hisle; mother, Ada Hisle (Covington); and a sister, Elizabeth Vaughn.
Visitation will be tomorrow, November 23, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 noon at Greater St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, 1909 W 24th St., Lorain; Rev. Angela Walker-Dudley, Officiant; Rev. Arnett Thornton, Eulogist. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Amherst.
