ELYRIA - Shirley J. (Sands) Coleman, 81, of Elyria and formerly of Lorain, died January 17, 2014, at her home.|
Born December 10, 1932, in Lorain, and a 1951-A graduate of Lorain High School, she was employed for several years at U.S. Steel and then for 25 years at Lake Terminal Railroad, retiring December 10, 1997.
Shirley had been a volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Lorain. She enjoyed roller skating, reading and watching figure skating, and was a television fan of "Downton Abbey", "Doc Martin" and "Blue Bloods". She was a frequent traveler to Las Vegas, where her favorite pastime was playing the slot machines.
Shirley is survived by daughters, Anne (David) Scott of Vermilion and Linda Hemlinger of Elyria; son, Dana Coleman of Elyria; grandchildren, Shawn and Jack Hemlinger, and Michael Scott; and sister, Ruth Ellen Sands of Tampa, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Georgia Sands; sisters, Lydia Barber and Doris Heldreth; and brothers, Richard, George, John, Charles and Robert Sands.
Friends will be received Tuesday, January 21, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria.
