Steve "Pishta" George Vilagi
SOUTH AMHERST - Steve "Pishta" George Vilagi, 83 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family following an illness.
He was born October 30, 1929 in Amherst, Ohio. Steve was a lifetime resident of South Amherst and graduated from South Amherst High School, class of 1948.
He proudly serve in the United States
where he fought on the front lines for two years.
He was employed at Ohio Edison for 35 years before retiring as an area foreman in 1987. Steve was also employed at South Amherst Sandstone Quarry and Thew Shovel. He was a member, and past deacon and elder, of St. John United Church of Christ in South Amherst.
Steve was a member and past commander the South Amherst American Legion Post #197. He was a current member of the Amherst American Legion Post #118 and the
of Foreign Wars Post #1662. Steve was the past commander, for many years, of the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. He loved working with his hands doing handyman work around is home. He loved his community of South Amherst and volunteered his time and talents installing the first set of lights on the sport fields of South Amherst Schools. Steve loved tending to his flower and vegatable gardens, especially his roses. He was an avid golfer, enjoying the competition found in golfing with his friends in the Amherst golf league.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years Betty L. Vilagi (nee: Schroeder); his daughter Kathy Jesionowski (husband Wayne); his son Kenneth Vilagi (wife Karen); daughters Karen Spicer of Elyria and Carol Catalano of Amherst; eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Steve was preceded in death by his brother Robert Vilagi; sister Margaret Hevener; and by his parents Steve and Veronica Vilagi (nee: Spurg).
Friends may call Thursday, January 3,2013, from 2p-6p at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave, Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Friday, 9am at the funeral home. The Rev, Paul Eaton, pastor of the St John United Church of Christ, will officiate. Full Military Honor will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
The family suggest that memorial contributions be made to New Life Hospice.
