Theodore "Ted" William Hiles, 66, of Put-in-Bay, born Nov. 27, 1947, in Lorain, passed away Dec. 24, 2013, in Put-in-Bay.
Originally from Lorain, he graduated from Lorain Admiral King High School.Ted was a Vietnam Veteran, honorably discharged from the USMC in 1969. He went to work for Ohio Edison in 1969, later retiring as general serviceman from Put-in-Bay in 2004. Ted became very involved in the VFW young, becoming the first Vietnam Veteran to be commander of the VFW Post 451 in Lorain. He ran the chairs to become the Commander of District 9, and later VFW State POW/MIA Chairman before he relocated to Put-in-Bay with his job at Ohio Edison. He remained active in military posts including the American Legion Post on the islands where he was Sergeant at Arms for several years. He married his wife, Tami, on Sept. 20, 2001, and they resided on the island. Ted was active in Lake Erie Islands Browns Backer functions and activities.
He is survived by his wife, Tamara (nee Woolridge) Hiles; children, Tracee Barbee, Therersa Shelton, Tabitha Rizzo and Theodore J. Hiles; grandchildren, special nieces and nephews, Christopher Buri, Donna, James and Mary Enderby.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Leona (nee Zellars) Hiles; and his sister, Marie Enderby.
A gathering for family and friends will be held Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Conference Center at the Commodore Perry Inn, Port Clinton. Burial will be Monday, January 6, 11 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, 555 N. Ridge Road W., Lorain. A gathering will immediately follow at VFW Post 451, 4562 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain.
