LORAIN - Willis F. "Bub" Deaton 88, of Lorain passed away December 23, 2011 in his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born February 22, 1923 in Wheeling , West Virginia. He moved to Lorain from Martins Ferry in 1950.
Mr. Deaton retired in 1984 as a set up man for the G. M. Fischer Body Plant in Elyria . He worked there for 34 years. He also worked for B. & O. Railroad in Wheeling. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 780, Elyria. After retirement, he worked as a Custodian at First Congregational Church in Amherst.
He was a World War II U. S. Army veteran in the Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns with the Hq Co 3d En 363d Inf. earning the EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 bronze stars, American Defense and the Good Conduct metals.
Bub enjoyed camping, traveling, golfing, woodworking, fixing cars and maintaining his home. For many years he helped plant flowers with his wife at Oakwood Park .
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 66 years Velma "Vel" Deaton (née Jones); sons George (Juanita) Deaton of Lancaster, Michael (Sharon) Deaton of Lorain, Keith Deaton of Las Vegas and Shawn (Rebecca) Deaton of Avon Lake; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Randolph L. and Nettie (née Knowles) Deaton; brother Melvin Deaton and a sister Thelma Porchey.
His family will receive friends Thursday, December 29 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain (440) 277-8164. His funeral service will be Friday in the funeral home at 10 AM. Rev. Guy Morton of Firelands Baptist Church, Wakeman will officiate. Following there will be a memorial luncheon at The American Croatian Club Hall, 4846 Oberlin Ave, Lorain.
