LAGRANGE - Dewey Robert Aldrich, 83, of LaGrange, Ohio and Bradenton, Fla., passed away Sunday, June 12, 2011, in his home in Bradenton after a nine-month battle with cancer.
He was born December 27, 1927, in LaGrange, where he resided all of his life.
He graduated in 1945 from LaGrange High School and played on the school's baseball and basketball teams.
He earned a Bachelor of Art degree in 1950 from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, where he played football his freshman year, pledged Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and played intramural basketball. During that time, he served one year in the U.S. Army, stationed in the Philippines.
Bob was a well respected senior agent with Nationwide Insurance, retiring in 1995 after 42 years with the company. He served the communities of Elyria and southern Lorain County, with offices in LaGrange. He was recognized many times for outstanding service to his policy holders and received several awards for his work with the company.
He was a member of LaGrange United Methodist Church. He had been an active member and past president of the LaGrange Lions Club. In 2010, he received his 60-year pin from the LaGrange Masonic Lodge, where he formerly served as grand master. He was also a member of Shriners International and enjoyed attending weekly luncheons at Sahib Shrine in Sarasota, Fla.
An avid golfer, Bob was well known in various golf leagues and participated in numerous tournaments throughout his life. He enjoyed watching sports, reading, working crossword puzzles and spending time with his friends and family.
He is survived by his children, John (Cathy) Aldrich of Lakewood, Ohio, Kenneth (Susan) Aldrich of Brunswick, Ohio, Wayne Andrew Aldrich of Shake Heights, Susan (Mark) von Fossen of Sarasota, Fla., and Kimberly (Christopher) Ceja of LaGrange; four grandchildren, one step-granddaughter and one great-grandchild; his brother, Merle "Dutch" Aldrich of Vasalia, Cal., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Bessie Aldrich; and brothers Wayne and Donald.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, at the LaGrange United Methodist Church, 105 W., Main St., LaGrange, the Rev. Ralph Krall officiating. A celebration of Bob's life will take place after the service in the church hall.
