Melvin Eugene "Gene" Squires Obituary
AMHERST - "Gene" Melvin Eugene Squires, 82 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at University Hospital Amherst Health Center following a sudden illness.
He was born April 1, 1931 in Newburg, W.Va. Gene was raised in Pennsylvania before enlisting in the United States Navy where he proudly served in the Korean Conflict.
He was employed at National Association of College Stores for over 25 years before retiring as a warehouse manager. He was also employed at IGA in Amherst for 20 years as an assistant manager. Gene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served as a former usher and elder. He was a member of the Vermilion Amvets. Gene loved to work in his yard and took great pride in keeping it well manicured. He enjoyed his family vacations to Hilton Head, South Carolina and visiting family in Pennsylvania. Gene had a love for stray animals.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years Yvonne Elaine Squires (nee: Keisler); his son and his wife "Gene" Eugene M. and Barb Squires, his daughter and her husband Lynne and Bob MacLean all of Vermilion; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandson; his sisters Wanda "Gail" Victor and her husband Cliff, Helen "Babs" Squires all of Haydentown, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his brother James Franklin Squires; his sister Wilma Mace; and by his parents Homer and Bessie Squires (nee: Rankin).
Friends may call Sunday, February 2, 2014, from 2-5 at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Monday, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church; 115 Central Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Terrance Adamson, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst. Military Honors will be given by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
