SOUTH AMHERST - William Ray Miller, 72 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst in New Russia Township, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
He was born July 12, 1941 in Beallsville, Ohio. William was raised in South Eastern, Ohio before moving to New Russia Township where he had made his home since 1971.
William was employed at General Motors for 38 ½ years before retiring in 2000. He was a member of Vermilion Church of Christ. William always took great pride in tending to his garden and his lawn. He had a servant's heart and was known to help anyone in need, including his neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed raising cattle. He loved rebuilding antique tractors with his son and grandsons. William enjoyed attending the Lorain County fair watching the draft horses and the pony pulls. William was a member of the LaGrange Engine Club. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events and keeping (unofficial) score.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years Marilyn Miller (nee: Truex); his son and his wife Scott and Sandy Miller of Wakeman; daughter and her husband Brenda and Jeff Greene of Antioch, Illinois; his grandchildren Samantha, Joel, Aaron and Tyler Miller, Jessica and Nathan Greene; his sisters Barbara Pittman and her husband Joe of New Concord, Ohio, and LaVaunne Miller of Zephyrhills, Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister Betty Kerr; and his parents Oakley and Ida Mae Miller (nee: Britton).
Friends may call Friday, February 28, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Matt Klingman, of Amherst Church of Christ and Linro Meade, of The Vermilion Church of Christ, will Co-officiate. Burial will follow at New Russia Township, New Russia Township.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Vermillion Church of Christ Food Bank or Lorain County 4H Endowment Fund.
