Helen T. Szalay Obituary
LORAIN - Helen T. Szalay, 97, of Lorain, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph.
She was born on January 20, 1917, to John and Tacyanna (nee Wozniak) Skolnicki, and graduated from Lorain High School.
Helen was a homemaker, a wonderful cook and baker, a talented seamstress and an artist, who loved to draw and paint. She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching basketball and baseball games on television.
She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Lazevich, of Lorain and Jane (Bing) Carlson of Port Huron, Michigan; son, Richard (Bre) Szalay of Amherst; grandchildren, Jill, Brian, Kristen, Traci, Mandi and Mindi; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Trenton, Alexis, Brandon, Alyssa, Jenna, Laney, Casey, Brady and Ellie; and sisters, Rose Dellisanti of Amherst and Virginia Armelie of Lorain.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Casey Szalay; parents, John and Tacyanna; and brothers, Joseph, Walter, Edward, Bruno and John.
The Szalay family will receive friends on Monday, March 3, 2014, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Closing prayers will be said on Tuesday, March 4, at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral center followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Father Craig Hovanec, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
