A. Joan Freeland
AVON LAKE - A. Joan Freeland (nee Huber), 85 of Avon Lake and formerly of Lorain passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014 after a short illness. Joan was born on September 28, 1928 in Cleveland. Her family moved to Avon Lake when she was very young and she graduated from Avon Lake High School in 1946. She met her husband, Bob, on a blind date and they were married in 1953.
Joan was a very active member of St. Anthony of Padua Church. She was involved in the Renew Program, Cursillo Movement, Marian Guild, Senior Sociables, Christ Renews His Parish, the St. Vincent de Paul Society; and was a lector and a Eucharistic Minister. She tried to be an example of service to God and neighbor. Some of Joan's other interests include crossword puzzles, reading, and sewing. She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan, but most of all loved being with her family.
Joan is survived by her children, Robert J. Freeland, Mary Jo (Malcolm) Diederick, Michelle (Dennis) Lightfoot, John Freeland, and Kenneth Freeland; grandchildren, Melissa (Pete) Mayhan, Laura Diederick, Cindy (John) Maigret, Ryan Diederick, and Megan Diederick, Mike (Mery) Lightfoot, Matt (Kellie) Lightfoot, Mark (Julie) Lightfoot, Becky Lightfoot, and Kristen Freeland; great grandchildren, Grace and Jack Mayhan, Hannah and Lauren Lightfoot, Harlie Lightfoot, and a great-grandchild due in August; sisters, Virginia Wilkins, Sr. Mildred Huber O.P., and Ruth Hassel.
She was preceded in death in 1998 by her husband of 45 years, Robert C. Freeland; parents, Charles and Judith (nee Lisy) Huber; sister, Clara Hassel; and brothers, Victor Huber, Robert Huber, Charles Huber, and Daniel Huber.
Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon Belden Road, Avon Lake on Friday, March 7 from 4-8pm. The Marian Guild will hold a rosary service at 3:30pm before visitation. Prayer service will be held on Saturday at the funeral home at 9:15am. With a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1305 E. Erie Avenue, Lorain to follow at 10am. The Rev. Richard Hudak, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Avon. Memorial contributions may be forwarded to St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1305 E.
