LAKE WALES, FL - Alfred E. Verhoff passed away 3/22/2014. Mr. Verhoff resided in Lake Wales, Florida where he retired after 36 years as Foreman at United States Steel in Lorain.
Born December 14, 1929 in Marywood, OH; Mr. Verhoff spent most of his life in Elyria with his wife Elizabeth (Betty Davis) with whom he was married for 64 years (7/30/49).
Alfred spent many years volunteering at St. Jude's Parish and School and Elyria Catholic. He and his brother Wilfred (Bud) designed and built the first Media Center at EC along with a retractable window treatment for the auditorium. When not volunteering at St. Jude's Parish or EC, Alfred and his brother spent many hours together building additions on to the homes of family members. When they weren't building together, they were the unofficial jokesters in the family. He was a T-Ball coach and built the T-Ball Stands for the Elyria League. An avid outdoorsman, he was Assistant Boy Scout Leader for St. Jude's Boy Scout Troop Number 133.
He is preceded in death by siblings, Louise DeJohn, William, Marcella Cornell, Helen Donovan, Armella Ross, Wilfred and Benedict.
Verhoff leaves 5 children behind; Nancy (Alliance, OH), Alfred Richard (Pam, Vermilion), Marilyn Wagner (Don, Chagrin Falls), Renee (Elyria), and Gary (Barb, Elyria).
He is preceded in death by son Dennis James. Additionally he leaves 10 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren behind.
Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, OH on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 5-9 P.M. Closing prayers will be in the funeral home on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 9:30 A.M. followed by mass at St. Jude Church, 590 Poplar Street, Elyria, OH at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Elyria.
