Douglas F. Thompson
COLUMBUS - Douglas F. Thompson, 82, previously of Lorain Ohio, currently, Columbus, passed away March 28, 2014. Doug was born in Toledo, January 1, 1932 to the late Edythe and Frank Thompson. He graduated from Toledo Waite HS and received a Bachelor Degree in Education from Miami University, and a Master's Degree from Bowling Green State University in Education.
Doug was a teacher in Fostoria and Lorain, Ohio. Doug was a High School football coach and directed the Lorain County Relays, as well as the City Recreation Department Junior Olympics.
He was inducted into the Ohio Football Coach's Hall of Fame in 1991. Earlier, he was enshrined in the Lorain County Football Coaches and Waite High Athletic Halls. He was named Northeastern Ohio AA District coach of the year and Amvets Post 47 City coach of the year, three times each. Doug was selected to coach in the 1976 North-South Ohio All-Star Football game. Previously, he made an appearance as a player in the first North-South All-Star game.
Doug was married to Peggy Thrower 1957-2001 (deceased); and Harriett Williams Cerbus 2004-2014.
Doug is survived by his children; Julianne T. Brown, (Columbus); Mark Thompson, (Columbus); and Matt Thompson, (Elyria, Ohio); and step children; Heather McConnell, (Hubbard, Ohio); Hollie Hawkins, (Midland, Mich.); Cindy Crum - deceased, (Sharon, PA); Melody Cerbus, (Hermitage, PA); Twelve grandchildren; and One great grandchild.
Doug, as many who teach and coach often spoke highly of the many players and students who impacted his valued life experiences.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221; where funeral services will follow at 7:00pm. Private interment at Wesley Chapel Cemetery at a later date.
