Thomas Joseph George, Sr., 86 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at New Life Hospice Residence Center following a brief illness.
A lifetime resident of Amherst, Tom was born on May 23, 1927. He graduated from John Carroll University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He owned and operated George's Tax Service since 1972. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army as a Sergeant First Class.
He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had attended the Band of Brothers Retreat and continued to maintain the bonds that he formed with these men. He was a member of the Amherst Rotary Club, the American Legion, and VFW. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing. By far his favorite past time was spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grand children with whom he had a special rapport.
Survivors include his wife of forty-three years Margaret George (nee: Alexander); his son Thomas Joseph George, Jr. of NM; his stepson William (Debbie) King of MD; his daughters Linda Henderson of Amherst; Barbara (Michael) Orgish of PA; Anita (Paul) Meldau of FL; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his sisters Rosemary Goodwin of Amherst; and Kathleen Barnhart of CA.
Tom was preceded in death by his brothers David and Salem "Sal" George; his sisters Ellie Akers and Minnie Shand; and his parents Salem and Sadie George (nee: Kamalay).
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst Ohio from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst, Ohio. Military honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
