LORAIN – Dominic S. Catanzarite, 94, of Lorain, died Thursday April 24, 2014 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home in Avon after a lengthy illness.
He was born February 21, 1920 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Dom attended Lorain schools. He served with the US Army during World War II with the 94th Artillery Division in Germany and France and later with the occupation of Germany and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded 4 campaign stars.
Dom worked at US Steel in Lorain for 14 years and then for the US Postal Service as a mail carrier for 27 years retiring in 1982.
Dom was a member of the Church of St. Peter in Lorain, attended St. John Catholic Church and was a charter member of the Italian-American Veterans Post #1 in Lorain. He enjoyed golf and bowling.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years Tina M. Catanzarite (nee DeChiaro), children Donna (Joseph) Ksenich of Lorain and James "JC" Catanzarite of Elyria, grandchildren Gena Catanzarite of Akron, Joseph C. (Adriann) Ksenich of Lorain, Jennifer (Zak) Collins of Roswell, Georgia, Kristi Jones of Lorain and Brandon Kalo of Lorain, great grandchildren Mia and Samuel Ksenich, Owen and Ivy Collins and Jayson Feliciano, brothers Joseph (Ellen) Catanzarite of Lorain, Julius (Marge) Catanzarite of Elyria, Sam Catanzarite of Lorain and Fred(Janice) Catanzarite of Vermilion and sisters Catherine "Cutty" Catanzarite, Antoinette Feldkamp of Lorain and Rose Bardar of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Rosa Catanzarite (nee Gallo), sister Mary Ann Szabo and grandson Jason Kalo.
The family will receive friends Sunday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at the Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where the Italian-American Veterans Post #1 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
