AVON - Jerome M. Gigliotti, age 85, of Avon, passed after a brief illness on Sunday, June 1, 2014.
Jerome was born on June 4, 1928, in Lorain, Ohio and graduated from Clearview H.S. in 1946. He attended Bowling Green State University and The Ohio State University. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1953 and was a member of the Omega Tau Sigma Fraternity. He entered the United States Air Force in October of 1953 and served as a veterinarian at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas until October of 1955.
Jerome established the Amherst Animal Hospital with his brother, Thomas, in 1960, and was actively involved in the practice for 48 years. He had the pleasure of working with his son, Mark, who joined the practice in 1980.
Jerome enjoyed caring for the family homestead with his wife, June, at Sunnyside Farm, Vermilion, for 37 years. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Amherst Noon Day Club. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for nearly 60 years, serving as a Eucharistic Minister for many of those years. Jerome and June would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 7th.
Jerome was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Florence June (nee Prindle); sons, Mark (Mary) Gigliotti, James (Liliana) Gigliotti, John (Vicki) Gigliotti, Jerel (Diane) Gigliotti; daughters, Karen (Daniel) Byrne, Pamela (Randall) Brown, Patricia (Thomas) Harrison; siblings, Thomas Gigliotti and Grace Chapman; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving father and mother, Thomas and Grace Gigliotti; and son, Joel Gigliotti.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst.
Closing prayers will be Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., at the funeral home followed by 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Rev. Lawrence N. Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made in memory of Jerome to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst, Ohio 44001 or to St. Joseph Overnight Shelter, P.O. Box 766, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
