Harold W. Long Obituary
AVON LAKE – Harold W. Long, 90 of Avon Lake formerly of Stow, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at EMH Regional Medical Center, Elyria following a short illness.
Harold was born, January 8, 1924 in Keota, Iowa, was raised in Stow and had lived in Avon Lake since 1949.
Harold was a graduate of Stow High School in 1942 and went to Case University's School of Applied Science on an academic scholarship. While at Case he majored in Chemical Engineering and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. His college career would be interrupted after 3 years as his deferment would not be renewed and he was drafted into the US Army and sent to Los Alamos, NM to assist the war effort on the Manhattan Project. He served two years and returned to Case University and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering.
In 1946 he took a job as a chemical engineer with BF Goodrich in Akron and in 1948 transferred to the Avon Lake facility. He worked 38 years with the company retiring as an Information Technology Systems Analyst.
Harold was a charter and active member of Lake Shore United Methodist Church, serving the church in most every capacity possible including chair of the finance committee, a lay leader, Sunday school teacher, member of the men's club, participated in mission trips, Wednesday evening spaghetti and Swiss steak meals and sang in the church choir.
Harold loved to sing and sang tenor as a member of several barbershop quartets as well as the Lorain Golden Crescent Chorus. He was also a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.
In his spare time Harold enjoyed gardening, a round of golf with friends, watching the Tribe on TV and a spirited match of croquet with family.
Harold is survived by children Cynthia of Ashville, NC; Nancy Busack (Dave) of Pickerington; Lorraine Donner of Avon Lake; Roger (Connie) of Worthington and Robert (Jeanie) of North Olmsted.
Other survivors include grandchildren Allison, Owen, Stephanie, Carolyn, Joel, Amy, Brian, Lindy, Becca, Mariah and Mike and great grandchildren Milena and Cameron.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Cathryn (nee Mulligan), son David (Barbara), brother Lloyd and parents Walter and Mabel (nee Long).
Friends may call at Lake Shore United Methodist Church, 33119 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake OH 44012 Friday, August 1 from 4:00-7:00pm and from 10:30-11:30am on Saturday with a luncheon at 11:30am. The funeral service will be at the church on Saturday at 1:00pm, Rev. Nancy Manner of the Church will officiate; interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Twinsburg.
