Roland Waugh Horn|
NEWBURY PARK, CA - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, husband and friend, Roland Waugh Horn, on November 10, 2012. He was 81 years young.
Roland was born July 22, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio to Roland Waugh Horn Sr. and Helen M. Koller. Roland graduated from Lorain H. S. in 1949, as a three sport letterman and was a senior class officer. Roland attended Rutgers University, in New Jersey on a baseball/basketball scholarship. While attending Rutgers, Roland joined Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, was a member of one of the best freshman basketball teams in Rutgers history (1950-1951), and met the love of his life Doris Jean Stenzel. Roland graduated from Rutgers in 1954 with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. Upon graduation Roland joined the Navy, and was stationed in Florida for the duration of his service.
Roland and Doris "Jeannie" Stenzel were married in New Brunswick, New Jersey on August 18, 1956. They lived in New Jersey where their first two children, Scott & Doug were born. After two years in banking, Roland started his career in radio, starting with advertising sales in NYC during the late 1950's through mid-1960's.
Roland and Jeannie moved their young family to Michigan for a new job in radio. Their third child, Paige, was born in Michigan. Roland's love of sports continued and was rewarded by his attending all 1968 World Series games, in which his beloved Detroit Tigers won the Series. A visit to California for a Rose Bowl game to cheer the University of Michigan started the family's move to Cali.
In 1971 Roland moved his family to Westlake Village, in Ventura County, California for new work in radio. Among the radio stations he worked for were KFI & KWST. He also was a part owner of AM radio station KGOE in Thousand Oaks, CA. Later, Roland worked in Real Estate & Tele Com. He retired in 1989 to watch his kids & grandkids play sports, or watch his favorite college or pro teams compete. Roland moved to Newbury Park in 2001, where, most of all, he cherished his walks around the neighborhood with Jeannie, and family gatherings.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Jeannie Horn: his sons, R. Scott Horn, of Newbury Park, CA: Douglas M. Horn, of Newbury Park, CA; his daughter Paige O'Shea, of Ventura, CA; his sister, Molly Betka, of Lorain OH; his grandchildren Shea O'Shea, & Paisley O'Shea; & two nephews.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a private event on February 16, 2013 in Newbury Park, CA.
