BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP - James E. Berry, 69 years of age, and a resident of Brownhelm Township, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born September 13, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in Oakwood and Bedford, Ohio. Brownhelm Twp has been his home for the last 36 years.
James proudly served in the United States Navy on the USS Ashland. He was employed at Bendix Westinghouse as an electrician before retiring. James was serving his 2nd term as the president of the Amherst Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #1442. He was also the past Commander of the American Legion Post #118 and the Jr. Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1662 both of Amherst. James was a member of the Amherst Veterans Honor Guard and participated in many services for veterans. His hobbies included golf, fishing and NASCAR racing. James loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his significant other Pam Burrows; his son and his wife James E. Jr. and Shelly Berry of Brownhelm Township; his daughters Melissa Miller of Amherst, Lori L. Hinde and her husband Brian, of Maumee, Ohio; his grandchildren Abigail J. Berry, Kaitlin A. Berry, James W. Berry, Justin K. Berry, Bethany A. Miller, Paul T. Miller, Savannah L. Hinde, Caroline Grace Hinde; his sisters Sandra (Kenneth - deceased) Riha (nee: Berry) of Macedonia, Joyce Collise (nee: Berry) and her husband John of Walton Hills; his brother and his wife David Lee and Michelle Berry of Brooklyn, Ohio; and twenty nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers William (Mary) and Jack Berry; and his parents William and Mattie Berry (nee: Herrin).
Friends may call Friday, December 14, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Full Military Honors will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
