Charles James "Charlie" Brown

1915 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Charles "Charlie" James Brown
AMHERST - Charles "Charlie" James Brown, 97 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Kingston of Vermilion.
Charlie was born in Fayette City, PA on June 23, 1915. He also lived in Brownsville, Monessen and N. Belle Vernon. He graduated from Belle Vernon High School in 1933.
Charlie entered the Army Air Corp. in April 1941 and served until Jan. 1946. He began his career in AirTraffic Control in 1946 at Allegheny County Airport and retired from the Oberlin Air Route Traffic Control Center in 1973.
Charlie moved to Amherst in 1963 where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Amherst.
All his life he really enjoyed baseball, early in his life as a player, always in life as a fan. One of the highlights of his life was attending the Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training each year from 1967 through 1987.
In his retirement he loved watching all sports, especially all levels of baseball, and was a scout for the Pirates. Still, his greatest joys were spending time with his wife, two sons and all his grandchildren and just the simple pleasure of taking his dogs for daily walks at the ball fields.
Survivors include his sons and their wives Chuck and Nancy Brown of Amherst, Dick and Terri Brown of Akron; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his sisters Sara Brown of Oakmont, Pennsylvania and Elsie Rippel and her husband Lawrence of North Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-nine years Anna Brown (nee: Matz) on July 8, 2008; his sister Beverly Souply; and his parents Charles John and Emma Brown (nee: French).
Friends may call Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Daniel Reinke, pastor of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
