Alex L. Abel, Jr.|
LORAIN - Alex L. Abel, Jr, 78, of Lorain, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a lengthy illness.
He was born October 27, 1934 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Alex graduated from Lorain High School and served with the US Army from 1954-1956. He retired from BF Goodrich in Avon Lake.
Alex played Class B Fast pitch Softball in Lorain and won many city championships with the Angie's Coach Light and AMVETS Post #47 teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing. He was a member of Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ, AMVETS Post #47, VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30, all of Lorain, the Sad Sacks of AMVETS Post #22 of Vermilion, the American Slovak Club and the Amherst Outdoors Club.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Dorothy Abel (nee Kochiss), sons Thomas Abel of Lorain and Michael Abel of Amherst, sister Marlene (David) Walters of Arizona and brother James A. Abel of Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alex and Elizabeth Abel (nee Molnar).
The family will receive friends Friday 4-7 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 am in the funeral chapel. The Rev. Peter Toth, pastor of Hungarian Reformed UCC in Lorain, will officiate. Cremation will follow and his ashes will be interred in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.
