AMHERST - Wayne R. Meyers, 74 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2013 at New Life Hospice Center in Lorain following a long illness.
He was born May 14, 1938 in Elyria, Ohio. Wayne was raised in Elyria and attended Elyria High School. He had made his home in Amherst for the last fifty-six years.
He was employed as a tow motor operator at Ridge Tool in Elyria for thirty-nine years before retiring in 2000. Wayne took great pride in being a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His greatest joy was being surrounded by his family and attending family events. Wayne was a social member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1662, American Legion Post #118 and the Amherst Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #1442. His enjoyed listening to music and playing cards.
Survivors include his beloved wife of fifty-six years Louise Elizabeth Meyers (nee: Syrowski); his daughters and their husbands Theresa and Brian Howald of Lorain, Rose and Jeff Wright of Elyria, Deborah and Michael Burns of Ashland, Pamela and John Mamone of Youngstown, Christine and James Klausing of Avon Lake; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; his brother and his wife Keith and Dolores Meyers of Amherst; sisters Susan Shupack and her husband Al of Tulsa, OK and Mary Lou and her husband Al Kendeigh of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Ronald, and Alan; sister Carol Shoulters and by his parents Ralph and Mary Louise Meyers (nee: Sinegar).
Friends may call Monday, March 11, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church; 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to New Life Hospice; 3500 Kolbe Road, Lorain, OH 44053 or Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church; 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst, OH 44001.
