LORAIN - Charles Sacco, age 86, of Lorain, passed away on the evening of March 14, 2013 while a resident of the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph. He was born in Guelph, Ontario Canada on June 25, 1926 and had been a resident of Lorain since adulthood.
Mr. Sacco was a veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Private First Class attached to the 19th Infantry Regiment/ 24th Infantry Division. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars along with the U.S. Service Medal. Chuck was a Life Member of Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans and was a longtime member of the post's Military Honor Guard. He was also a Life Member of both Mullen-Murray Post # 451 of the V.F.W., and Italian-American Veterans Post # 1.
He was a graduate of Dyke College and the holder of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business. For more than twenty years he had been employed as a Spark Tester at United States Steel Corporation's Lorain-Cuyahoga Works.
Mr. Sacco was a long-time parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He enjoyed the game of golf and looked forward to annual golf junkets to Myrtle Beach; he was also proud of the trophy wall that he constructed in his home which displayed the trophies and awards he had earned through his prowess in the sport.
Regarded as an accomplished handyman, Chuck enjoyed fishing and bicycling in his free time.
Survivors include his son Charles Sacco of Los Angeles, daughters Lori Ann (Doug) Wenzel of Cincinnati and Sandy (Bob) Matakovich of Amherst, along with grandsons Anthony, Andrew, Allen, and Jonathan.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen (nee Tomko) in 2009, by his granddaughter Victoria Wenzel, by his parents Ross and Josephine (nee Chirchiglia) Sacco, by brothers Bruno, Dominic, Joseph, and twin brother John, and by his sister Rose Campagnaro.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Daniel O. Divis, Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church officiating. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
Memorial contributions are encouraged to either the Wounded Warrior Project, the Activities Fund at Kingston of Vermilion, or to Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
