Gerald Flanders, Sr. DAYTON — Gerald Flanders, Sr., 80 years old, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Hospice in Dayton, Ohio. He resided in Dayton for the past 30 years.
Gerald was born in Lorain, Ohio on December 26, 1933. He attended Clearview High School before serving 4 years in the United States Navy and 4 years in the United States Army. Gerald was discharged with honors from both services. After his discharges he attended Pennsylvania State University for Culinary Arts.
Gerald was an accomplished chef, employed in restaurants in Lorain, Vermilion, Cleveland and Dayton, Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. He enjoyed walking, Chess, fishing, and watching sports, especially the Cleveland Indians and Browns.
He is survived by his sons, Gerald Flanders, Jr. (Lisa) of Elyria, Ohio and Kevin Flanders of Philadelphia, Pa.; Six grandchildren: Laquita Lewis of Kansas City, Mo., Alexis Leak (Byron) of Huntersville, N.C., Arenne Flanders of Charlotte, N.C., Kareen and Christopher Flanders of Philadelphia, Pa., and Katrina Flanders of the US Air Force; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Emma J. Davis of Chicago, Ill. and Susie J. Dixon of North Ridgeville, Ohio; one uncle, James Holliman and one aunt, Mackie Pearl Ramsey (nee Holliman); and a plethora of nephews, nieces and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence I. Flanders, Sr. and Susie J. Ashby (nee Holliman); brothers, Clarence I Flanders, Jr., Melvin, and Alvin; and sister Roberta Dean.
Gerald has donated his body to the Veterans Administration. Per his request there will be no formal memorial service. Gerald wanted to be remembered as an individual who never met a stranger, had a smile for everyone he met and loved all mankind. Your prayers and remembrances are appreciated by the family.
