Alex Novak
Alex Novak, who has been residing the past four years near his son Alex, passed away on May 12, 2013 at Ebeid Hospice, Sylvania, OH. Prior to 2009, he had been a lifelong resident of Lorain.
Born on December 6, 1919 to Alex Novak and Julia Halasz, he, along with four brothers and one sister, was raised in South Lorain. Prior to his 1938 graduation from Lorain High School, he had been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Alex worked at National Tube (U.S. Steel) until he joined the U.S. Army, shortly after the Pearl Harbor invasion. The war took him to Europe with the 90th Quartermaster Company, where he earned the rank of Technician 5th Grade and received the EAME Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Arrowhead and the Good Conduct Medal. Returning stateside, he was then employed by the United States Postal Service, stationed in the downtown main office until his retirement.
In 1946, Alex married Mary Belovics at St. Ladislaus Hungarian Catholic Church, where they were lifelong members. They were married for sixty-two years. After retiring in 1982, he and Mary took numerous trips across the United States, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and the Holy Land. They also spent many winters in Fort Myers. Alex enjoyed bowling, stamp collecting, carpentry, puzzles and the Cleveland sports teams.
His wife, parents, sister, Julia; brothers, Steve, Nick, Andy, an infant brother; infant granddaughter, Caroline, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his children, Alex (Walli), Jane, of Silverdale, WA; grandchildren, Trenten, Cara; brother, Joe and many nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services, with military honors provided by the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20, were conducted by the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Father John Retar, Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Parish, officiated.
