1920 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP - John G. Karney, 92 years of age, and a resident of Brownhelm Township, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
He was born August 2, 1920 in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania where he was raised and attended high school playing on the school football team. After turning eighteen, John had lived in New Jersey, and Detroit before eventually coming to Lorain. He had made his home in Brownhelm Township for the last fifty-seven years.
John was employed as a lathe operator at Thew Shovel and eventually retiring from U.S. Kobe/Seamless Plant. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst for over sixty years. John was a devoted family man who enjoyed family picnics. His hobbies included gardening, poker, fishing, bowling, golfing and hunting. John was a corn hole master. He was a musician at heart and loved playing his guitar. He enjoyed his leisure time watching college football and westerns.
Survivors include his sons Daniel J. Karney and his wife Mary Kate of Vermilion, Michael A. Karney and his wife Constance of Wakeman, John U. Karney of Amherst; his daughters and their husbands Kathleen M. and Ken Kinsley of Amherst, Mary Y. and Larry Harmych of Vermilion, Barbara J. and James Poznako of Wellington; sixteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren and his sister Marie Bailey of California.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty years Barbara E. Karney (nee: Urban) on January 28, 1989; his brothers Joseph, Leslie, Burt; his sister Barbara O'Conner and by his parents Burt and Mary Karney (nee: Kotacs).
Friends may call Friday, July 19, 2013, from 4-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10 :00 a.m. from St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain
