AVON LAKE - Irvin William Henze Jr., 94, of Avon Lake and formerly of Vermillion and Eagle River, Wis., passed away on Friday, August 2, 2013 after a two month illness in Avon Lake. Mr. Henze was born on October 26, 1918 in Big Bend, Wis. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelors in Physical Education.
Mr. Henze proudly served our country as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII after surviving the Pearl Harbor attack. He was called back for active duty during the Korean War and taught Military Science at Princeton University for four years. After being discharged from active duty Mr. Henze served in the Air Force Reserves until he retired as a Colonel in 1969. After WWII Mr. Henze worked as an FAA Air Traffic Controller in Hawaii, Cleveland, and Oberlin until he retired as a Supervisor in 1973. He was a president for the Snowmobile Club in Eagle River, Wis. and was a member of Good Sam Club. Irvin liked to fish on Lake Superior and travel in his RV with his wife Helen.
Irvin is survived by his children, Mary E. Mura (John) of Gahanna, William G. Henze of Lorain, Peter S. Henze (Pat) of Cuyahoga Falls, and John I. Henze (Kerry) of Venice, Fla.; step-children, Sandra A. Edwards of Lorain, Timothy J. Lerchbacker (Leesa) of Cypress, Texas, and Janelle I. Slavick (Dean) of Concord Township; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (nee Spooner); second wife, Helen (nee Sayers); parents, Irvin W. Henze Sr. and Esther (nee Abel); two brothers; and two sisters.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, August 24 at the BUSCH FUNERAL HOME, 32000 Detroit Road, Avon at 11 a.m. Interment at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
