AMHERST - Michael Robert Diedrick, 51 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014, surrounded by his family at Allen Memorial Hospital in Oberlin, following a brief illness.
Born November 6, 1962, in Akron, Michael had made his home in Amherst for the past 48 years.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. For 33 years, Michael was an active member of Murray Ridge School and workshop. Michael was a member of the Murray Ridge Choraleers. He loved entertaining family and friends by singing and playing his guitar. Michael enjoyed the many camping trips he took with his family and also participated in summer camp at Murray Ridge. He was active with the Special Olympics, where he won multiple medals in swimming, basketball, and track. Michael was an enthusiastic sports fan. He enjoyed Elyria Catholic Panther sports as well as the Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. He was a warm and engaging friend to all he met.
Survivors include his father, Donald Robert Diedrick of Amherst; brothers, Bryan (Noreen) Diedrick of Del City, Oklahoma, Eric Diedrick of Lake Orion, Michigan, and Jason (Beth) Diedrick of Amherst; sisters, Diane Diedrick of Elyria and Melissa (Mike) Shuppe of Kirtland; as well as eight nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Jean Diedrick (nee Plas) on May 8, 2013; maternal grandparents, Robert and Ann Plas; and paternal grandparents, Robert and Loretta Diedrick.
Friends may call Wednesday, January 15, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Amherst.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Catholic Relief Services, CDS Financial Office, 1404 E. Ninth Street, 8th Floor, Cleveland, OH 44114-1722.
