AMHERST - Burl D. "Bud" Goodwin, age 89 and a resident of Amherst, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at Mercy New Life Hospice after a long illness.
Bud was born October 31, 1924 in Buckhannon, W.Va., to the late Floyd C. and Laura V. (nee Thorne) Goodwin. He proudly served in the U.S.
World War II
, in North Africa and Italy. Bud was retired from Ridge Tool, Elyria, where he had been a tool grinder. He was employed there for 43 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst. His other memberships include a lifetime membership in
Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 1662, Amherst, American Legion Post 118, Amherst, and Catholic Golden Agers of St. Joseph Church. In the past, Bud had been a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1442, Amherst, Knights of Columbus Council 4891, Amherst, and was past president of the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph Church.
Bud liked to play cards, travel, and in his younger years enjoyed golfing and bowling. Most of all he loved spending time with his extended family.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years Rosemary K. (nee George); nine children, Charles "Buddy" (Debra Macur) of Elyria, Diane "DeeDee" (Walter) Russell of Amherst, Deborah (Edward) Maguire of Amherst, Mary Ellen (Michael) Denny of Amherst, Cynthia (Antonio) Morosi of Amherst, Lisa (Dennis) Trace of Florida, Roseanne (Daniel) Kuncel of Amherst, JoAnne "Joey" (Ken Dobias) Madvad of Amherst, Theresa (Curt) Wengrzynowicz of Michigan; 27 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and his sister Marjorie (Wayne) Belt of Maryland.
In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his daughter Donna Howell (1998), brothers Billy B., Eugene, and Howard Goodwin, and a sister Nancy Knapp.
Family will receive friends Saturday, 9 a.m. until time of closing prayers at 12:30 p.m., at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m. and be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst. Rev. Lawrence N. Martello, pastor, will officiate. Private family interment in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
