Helen (Novak) Vietzen-Howdyshell Obituary
ELYRIA - Helen Vietzen-Howdyshell (nee Novak) died at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph on Sunday, February 2, 2014.
Helen was born February 24, 1924, in Butler, PA. She was raised in South Amherst, and was a graduate of South Amherst High School in 1942. Her first husband, Albert C. Vietzen Jr. preceded her in death on April 3, 1990, after 43 years of marriage.
Helen worked at Ford Motor Company in Lorain for 23 years in data processing and with the Traffic Department. She retired in 1980. After her retirement, she also worked as a cashier at Brentwood Golf Course in Grafton for several years.
Helen enjoyed traveling and enjoyed many winters in Florida. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, and watching the Cleveland Indians and Cavaliers. She was an avid golfer and had a hole in one. A past member of Eastern Star, and the Elyria Women's Club, she was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church for over 55 years. She was also a volunteer at Elyria Memorial Hospital for 35 years.
Helen is survived by her husband of 18 years, Alvin Howdyshell; son, Jeffrey (Sally) Vietzen of Elyria; daughter, Susan (James) Twining of Cape Coral, FL; grandsons, Christopher (Michelle) of Wellington and Travis (Amanda) of Santa Barbara, CA; and three great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Annabel Twining of Wellington, and she was humbled and honored to have her great-granddaughter, Helen Rose Twining of Santa Barbara, CA, named after her. Her extended family includes daughter, Roberta (Daniel) English of Rocky River; sons, Dennis (Sharon) Howdyshell of Rochester, MI and Ronald (Carol) of Chelsea, MI; four extended grandchildren, Leah Howdyshell of Madison Heights, MI, Marci Howdyshell of Columbus, Kristen Howdyshell of Madison Heights, MI, and Brett English of Avon Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Magdaline (nee Kowalski) Novak; brothers, Paul, Peter, John and Harry; and sister, Mary.
Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria, on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, from 3 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 360 Princeton Ave., Elyria, with the Rev. Beth McKee officiating. Burial will be in Murray Ridge Cemetery.
