AVON - Urban W. "Duke" Klingshirn, age 92, a lifelong resident of Avon, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at his home following a short illness.|
Urban worked as a machine operator for Midland Steel in Cleveland, retiring in 1983 after 37 years. He served as a volunteer firefighter for the Avon Fire Department from 1954-1993. He received the Blue Coat of the Year award from the Knights of Columbus in 1989, honoring him for his service with the Avon Fire Department.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Avon, where he was active with the Holy Name Society; American Legion Post 211, Avon Lake; UAW Local 486, Cleveland; a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose 778 in Elyria since 1942 and a social member of VFW Post 7035.
Survivors include son, Thomas of Shawnee, Kansas; daughters, Kathleen Vincent of Avon Lake, Marilyn O'Brien of New Albany; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and sister, Irene Wohlever of Sandusky.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene in 2003; daughter, Louise Ogden in 2000; parents, Charles and Mary Ann Klingshirn; brothers, Walter, Charles, Raymond and Bernard; sisters, Mary Louise Klingshirn, Virginia Perrin and son- in- law, James O'Brien in 2003.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 P.M. at the Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville. A prayer service will be held on Saturday at 9:15 A.M. in the funeral home followed by a 10 A.M. Mass at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church. Rev. C. Thomas Cleaton, Pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Avon.
