Messenger, Shirley - Pittsburg

She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1959 and Pittsburg State University in 1963.             Shirley and J.D. Messenger were happily joined in marriage in 1963.             Shirley touched many young lives teaching kindergarten, first, and second grades at Eugene Field and Lakeside Elementary for many years. Shirley and J.D.  raised two daughters, Cathy and Kristy, in a house they built together. When her girls were young, she worked for Head Start before returning to teaching and earning her Master's degree.             In retirement, she and J.D. built a lake house at Farlington and spent many weekends enjoying family and friends. Shirley also thoroughly enjoyed gardening, and her beautiful yard was featured once in the Pittsburg Garden Tour. During the winter months, J.D. and Shirley traveled extensively and visited several countries. They also had season tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City's New Theatre. Shirley was an active and dedicated member of her P.E.O. Chapter, C.J. and the First United Methodist Church.             Shirley is survived by her husband, J.D. Messenger of Pittsburg; two daughters, Cathy McGinty and her husband, Paul of Wichita, KS, and Kristy Uttley and her husband, Paul of Pittsburg; and her grandchildren, Haley Uttley, Conner McGinty, Ryan McGinty, Zach Uttley, Carter Uttley, and Keira McGinty.             She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Carole Jacques and Marilyn Troth.             The family would like to thank Comfort Care and Southern Care Hospice for their uncompromised dedication.             Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (June 30) at the Brenner Mortuary with Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Monday. The family suggests memorials to the USD 250 Scholarship Foundation. These may be left at the services or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
