Edward Eugene Koester, Sr., known to his family and friends as Dad, Grandpa, Gramps and Doodle, age 82, of Joplin, MO, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2013. He was born August 30, 1931 in Arkansas City, KS, grew up in Brazilton, KS, and was a resident of Joplin for the past 50 years. Edward served in the U.S. Army and received three medals of valor, 2 bronze stars
and a purple heart
for his active duty in the Korean War
. He owned Ed's Road Service for over 30 years and after retiring in 1991, treasured spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, William and Lydia Koester, his birth parents, Edward Eugene and Mae Berry DeMart, his sister, Betty DeMart Ziegler, his half-brother, Ronald Henry DeMart, and his grandson, Jason Arnold.
Edward is survived by his wife of 61 years, Therese Westhoff Koester; his children, Gene Koester and wife Nancy of Joplin, MO, Dave Koester and wife Linda of Edmond, OK, Debbie Lovell and husband Skip of Garland, TX, Brenda Bever and husband Joe of Basehor, KS, Chris Koester and wife Christi of Joplin, MO, and Jennifer Duncan and husband Russell of Goodman, MO; 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; his half-sister, Lois DeMart Adams and husband Don of Roscommon, MI and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, 2650 Oakridge Extension, Neosho, MO. After the service, a gathering for family and friends will be held at the Church.
