Mary Joan "Jo" Swigart 83, of Pittsburg, KS passed away peacefully at 7:53am Thursday March 13, 2014 in Frontenac, KS following an illness.
Jo was born October 23, 1930 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of John Wesley and Anne Mae (Fox) Partin. She lived most of her life in Pittsburg with her husband of 60 years Harold "Swany" Swigart who preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother John Wesley Partin II, daughters Holly (Jim) Reed, Heidi (Roger) Misasi, a son Ben (Carol) Swigart, and nieces Colleen Kenney and Amory (Mikel) Lovin. She is also survived by grandchildren Muriel and Eli Green, Madi and Rolland Reed, Adam, Paul, Maggie, David Misasi, Courtney, Leigha, and Riley Swigart, Amanda Bettis and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Connie Trebbie and Georgia "Mike" Ridge.
Mrs. Swigart graduated from Pittsburg High School where she was active in Drama, Choir, and the Girls Athletic Association. She participated in one of the first synchronized swimming clubs at PHS. In her youth Jo was active in Rainbow Girls serving as Worthy Advisor, and continued this involvement into her adult life eventually serving as Mother Advisor.
Jo was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ for many years. She sang in the church choir, taught church school and served countless church dinners. Mrs. Swigart loved the arts. She was a model, vocalist and an actor. She was involved in Pittsburg Community Theatre for many years performing her last role as Big Mama in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"at the age of 68. Some of her other standout performances in Pittsburg Community Theatre were in "Cemetery Club" and "Barefoot in the Park".
Jo's greatest roles in life were as wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. She always had time for her family and loved holidays and family gatherings. She was a loving Christian person who always put God first, others second and herself third.
Funeral Services will be 2:00pm Saturday March 15, 2014 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS with Fr. Thomas Stroot officiating. Burial will follow at the Rosebank Cemetery in Mulberry, KS. Family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday March 14, 2014 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the Pittsburg Community Theatre.
