Ray Spriggs Obituary
Ray Spriggs, 102, of Pittsburg, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, at his residence.
He was born January 16, 1912, at West Mineral, KS, the son of Joel Etra and Bertha Estelle (Hamblin) Spriggs. He attended area schools and graduated from West Mineral High School.
On June 18, 1938, Mr. Spriggs was united in marriage to Ann Zagar. She preceded him in death on October 2, 2001.
He then married Hazel Vena on April 5, 2004. She survives of the home.
Mr. Spriggs worked for Shepherds Construction in Chicago, IL, then at the Parsons Ammunition Plant for two years as a construction foreman. He also worked at the P and M Coal Company. He then returned to his first love as a farmer, from which he retired.
Along with his brother, Roy, they were co-owners and developers of the Spriggs Twin Cove on Table Rock Lake.
He was one of the directors of the Land Bank for 18 years. Mr. Spriggs was a board member of the Beulah Church for 13 years along with the Beulah Schools for many years. Membership was also held in the Church of Christ, Pittsburg, KS.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara Ann Johanson, of Austin, TX, two step-sons, Mickey Vena and his wife, Linda of Village of Lock Lloyd, MO, and Scott Vena and his wife, Dana of Overland Park, KS, one grandson, Shay Johanson and his wife, Jill of Houston, TX, three great-grandchildren, Bonner Johanson, Lubbock Burton and Ellie Papp and many nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, Oscar, Luther, Lee, Ross, Willie and Roy Spriggs, four sisters, Lelah Sullinger, Lula Ziegler, Lola Scroggins, and Goldie Crain, and one granddaughter, Chaunda Johanson Burton.
A service for Mr. Spriggs is set for 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Church of Christ, Pittsburg, with Jerry Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the Girard City Cemetery, Girard, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m., until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Brenner Mortuary. The family suggests memorials to the Church of Christ, Pittsburg and/or Beulah Community Church. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
