Dwight Martin Mays Obituary
Dwight Martin Mays, 70, of Girard, Kansas, died at 12:42 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at his residence in Girard, surrounded by his family.
He was born October 7, 1943 at Bunch, Oklahoma to George and Pauline (Payne) Mays. He attended Greasy Country School and Cave Springs High School.
Dwight worked for the Anthony Power Plant in his early years, working his way up to Plant Superintendent. In 1971, he became the City Superintendent in Erie, Kansas. He was a City Manager from 1971-1989 for Wetumka, Choctaw, Krebs, Henryetta, Okemah and Wagoner, Oklahoma and City Administrator in Girard. From 1989-2009, Dwight worked throughout the U.S. as an industrial electrician for A-Lert Corporation. After retiring, he could always be found enjoying the outdoors. He loved gardening, working in the yard and building or fixing most anything. Most times, Mr. Mays could be spotted fixing the neighborhood kids' bikes or offering to mow a neighbors' yard. He loved taking rides in the country listening to oldies and fishing with his wife, Judy. Dwight was a loving family man and treasured spending time with them.
Dwight and Marilyn Misak were married in December, 1962 and later divorced. They had two children, Tammy and David. He married Judy Runyon Heavener on April 22, 1972. Dwight and Judy had three children, Brian, Ann & Melinda. They lived throughout Oklahoma and Kansas but had called Girard their home for the past twenty-seven years.
He was a member of Erie Federated Church in Erie.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Judy, of the home include daughters Tammy & Ryan Sneddeker of Hutchinson, Kansas, Ann & Joel Cole of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Melinda & Mike Tippit of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren Tyson & Darcy Winningham, Jesse & Kerri Mays, Ryan & Karissa McGee, Evan & Jacci McGee, Casey & Jimmy Criswell, Teesa Sneddeker, Cami Cole and Ava Lowry; great-grandchildren Taylor, Caden, Caige, MaKenna, Noah, Gavin, Jade, Aden, Gavin and Grady; sisters Pat Isaacs and Verlia Leatherwood, both of Stilwell, Oklahoma, Carline Morrison of Lees Summit, Missouri and brothers Larry Mays of Independence, Missouri and Tom Mays of Houston, Texas
He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, David Martin Mays and Brian Scott Heavener Mays and brother, Dwaine Mays.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the Federated Church in Erie with Rev. Larry Jordan officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery at Erie.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie where friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Friday.
Friends may call at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard after 3:00 p.m., Thursday and from 9:00 a.m., until 11:00a.m. on Friday.
