Carolyn (Knotts) Spurling Obituary
Carolyn Spurling, 85, passed away at her home in Girard on April 24, 2014 after a brief battle with cancer.
Carolyn was born to Sam and Gwendolyn Knotts on June 23, 1928, and with the exception of short periods when the family lived in Twin Lakes, Colorado and New York City, where her father worked digging subway tunnels, she was a southeast Kansas girl and graduated from Ft. Scott High School in 1946. In November of the same year, Carolyn married John Spurling and the two made their home, raising a family and farming, in the Cato area of northern Crawford County. They later moved closer to Farlington where they farmed until 2003. Despite her soft and gentle nature, Carolyn worked hard her entire life. She milked the cows, managed a house filled with four kids and a husband who was a true character, and was employed for many years at Western Insurance.
Carolyn was a long-time member of the Farlington United Methodist Church, a Sunday-school teacher, an avid reader, and one who never shied away from the challenge of a difficult jigsaw puzzle.
Her parents, her husband, and one beloved daughter, Gwendolyn Mae McFarland, preceded Carolyn in death.
She is survived by her sister Evelyn Blubaugh of Fort Scott; a son, Walter Lee Spurling and his wife Lucille of Girard; two daughters, Johna Carol Bever and her husband Steve of Farlington and Rebecca Lynn Weatherby and her husband Thom of Orange County, California; a son-in-law Dean McFarland of Kansas City, Kansas; 14 grand- and 18 great-grandchildren; and three nephews-Bud, Mike and Sam Blubaugh-who she loved and treated as if they were her own sons. Carolyn was soft-spoken and kind, with an inner strength that will not be forgotten by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Graveside services will be held Monday morning at 11 am at the Farlington Cemetery with Rev. Steve Cole officiating. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Sunday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.
Memorials will be to the Farlington Methodist Church and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
