Cecilia M. "Cece" (Upton) Powell Obituary
Cecelia M. "Cece" Powell, 103, of Olathe, Kansas, and formerly of Pittsburg and Girard, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Villa St. Francis Nursing Home in Olathe.
She was born March 7, 1911 in Farlington, Kansas, a daughter of Chester Upton and Marjorie E (Woods) Hewett. She attended high school in Mulberry, Kansas in 1929 and she received her administration degree from Draughn Business College in Springfield, Missouri in 1931.
Cele worked as an executive secretary for a construction company, the government, and for Merck Sharp and Dohne Pharmaceuticals in Kansas City, Kansas from 1946 until 1963. She was an office manager for Evans Chevrolet in Girard from 1964 until 1978 and at the Girard Press from 1978 until 1981 before working for Wichita Services for the Blind. She was one of the first fulltime employees hired when Envision opened its Pittsburg, Kansas manufacturing facility in June of 1993. She received the John F. Eberhardt Manufacturing Employee of the year in 2001.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Pittsburg and a Past Worthy Matron, in 1971, of the Electa Chapter No. 23, Order of the Eastern Star of Girard. She was a member of the Regal Chapter No. 10, Order of the Eastern Star of Fort Scott, Kansas. She was a member and Grand Royal Matron for Kansas, 1979 and 1980, of the Amaranth Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Cele is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Hewett of Overland Park, Kansas; nieces Linda Renfro of Olathe, Kansas, Rebecca Parker and her husband Mickey of Lenexa, Kansas and Cynthia McCall and her husband Greg of Overland Park, Kansas; Mary Lee Wattelet (wife of late nephew Frank Wattelet, Sr.); great-nephews Dennis Hyre, Erik Hyre, Chris Parker, Jeff Parker, Zach McCall, Frank Wattelet, Jr., Kurt Wattelet and Kristy Grantham.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Louise Wattelet, her brother, Edward Leon Hewett and her nephew, Frank Wattelet, Sr.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Rev. J. Lemert Whitmer officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
