Lyle F. Casey Obituary
Lyle F. Casey, 79, of St. Paul, died at 9:16 p.m., Friday, July 4, 2014 in the emergency room at Labette Health in Parsons. He had been in his usual health and his death was not expected.
He was born July 27, 1934 in St. Paul, Kansas to William Patrick and Agnes Olive (Volmer) Casey. He grew up in St. Paul where he was a 1952 graduate of St. Francis High School.
Following high school, he worked two years at the M-K-T Railroad prior to entering the United States Navy where he served on the USS Ozbourn destroyer. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to St. Paul where he farmed and raised cattle.
He and Mary Frances VanLeeuwen were married August 5, 1967 at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. They later divorced.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul and the Knights of Columbus. In earlier years, he had received the Kansas Bankers Soil Conservation Award and had served on various boards including the St. Francis Church Board, the Farm Service Agency Board and the Exchange State Bank Board of Directors. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 116 in St. Paul and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his Wednesday night "family". Lyle loved his family, siblings and friends. He especially enjoyed the special days he spent at the "Big River" with his grandchildren and attending their activities and sporting events.
Survivors include one son, Bill Casey and his wife, Kristine, Erie, KS; one daughter, Julie Cuthbertson and her husband, Scott, Girard, KS; four grandchildren, Chloe Casey, Kelli Cuthbertson, Cole Cuthbertson and Alec Cuthbertson; his companion, Mary Jane Whelan, St. Paul, KS; one brother, Bob Casey, Independence, KS; four sisters, Doris Owens, Carolyn Butts and Evelyn Tajchman, all of Wichita, KS, and Shirley O'Donnell, Edmond, OK; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery with military honors given by American Legion Post No. 116 of St. Paul. The rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the church. The family will receive friends immediately following the rosary in Parish Hall.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the American Legion Post No. 116 of St. Paul, or the St. Paul Schools Alumni and Friends Association to be used for the Veteran's Day Program Fund.
